Root Canal Treatment

What is a root canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Root canal therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. Dr. Desir and Dr. St. Paul use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will a root canal cost?

The cost associated with root canals can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I had a toothache and needed immediate help. My general dentist told me that I needed a root canal. I decided it would be best for me to see a specialist. I checked the web and saw the glowing reviews for Dr. Desir and Dr. St. Paul. I drove from Atlanta to be seen by Dr. Desir. Unfortunately, I found (before I got on the road) that this office is not in my dental network. The cost was more than I would have paid if I had gone to a network endodontist. Nonetheless, I had Dr. Desir do the root canal anyway because of my need for immediate attention, and also because the reviews were so good. I thought, "If these reviews are real, it's worth the drive and extra money." Well, I'm happy to report it was definitely worth the drive and extra money. And, actually, without my asking, they submitted a request for reimbursement to my insurance company. I remember either Brittany or Christen saying, "You may not get anything back. But we may be able to get you back $155.00. It's worth a try." Guess what? I got the $155.00! That's service. Of course, no one wants a root canal. It has a reputation of being a very painful procedure. However, I noticed in review after review that former patients reported that they were surprised that the procedure wasn't painful. That's the kind of surprise I was looking for. Again, I'm happy to report that the reviews were real. This is what I experienced, too. Complete honesty: There were two momentary times that I felt super sensitivity as Dr. Desir worked on my tooth. But he is VERY keen to not causing pain. So he noticed a little flinch, asked me about it, and administered more medicine to make sure I felt no pain. All the while, Senoria or Nikki was there patting me on the arm and squeezing my shoulder to assure me. Ha, ha, ha. You'd be surprised how powerful a strategic touch is when you're tense. (Thank you, ladies!!!) All in all, it was as positive an experience a root canal can be. I do need another one in the near future. I will happily make the drive to go back to Dr. Desir and this remarkable staff of wonderful and sensitive professionals.

Dr. Alison St. Paul was awesome. She made me feel very comfortable and let me know everything she was doing and about to do. I had a great experience and would highly recommend her if you are in need of a root canal. My dentist can't stop talking about her level of work and how great of a job she did on my root canal. Thanks Dr. St. Paul! I am hoping that I will never need another one; however, you would definitely be my Dr. of choice. Thanks again!

Thankfully I was able to get an appointment with Dr. St. Paul earlier than another referred endodontist. I walked in very nervous and scared and expecting to be in pain and misery and walked out happy and pain free. I had zero wait time even though I was a little early. The entire staff were kind and caring. Many thanks to Dr.St.Paul and to all of the staff there for a very pleasant experience.

As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by a staff that was helpful and very professional. The procedure was explained to me in detail by Dr. Rolin Desir before he started. After he had completed the root canal on me by the way it was totally painless, I could give him a call if I have a problem. Thank You
