The apicoectomy procedure is an endodontic treatment provided by Dr. Rolin Desir and Dr. St Paul at McDonough Endodontic Center in McDonough, Georgia. It requires the surgical removal of a tooth’s root tip and surrounding infected tissue in order to save a damaged or infected tooth. It is typically recommended when other non-surgical root canal treatments, such as a traditional root canal or retreatment, have failed. It is also used for cases where there is a persistent infection or damage at the end of the root that cannot be effectively treated through conventional means.
But what does a patient need to do AFTER their apicoectomy procedure? Let’s look at several tips and suggestions to facilitate faster healing and recovery.
Six aftercare recommendations following the apicoectomy procedure
- Take prescribed medication as directed by your endodontist. It is common for dental providers to prescribe medication following an apicoectomy procedure. It is vital that you take these medications as directed to manage any discomfort or prevent infection after your treatment at McDonough Endodontic Center.
- Apply ice packs to the treated area. Swelling and bruising are common after an apicoectomy. To reduce these symptoms, it is recommended to apply ice packs on the treated area for about 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
- Avoid strenuous activities. To allow your body to heal properly, it is advised to avoid strenuous activities for at least a day or two after the procedure. This includes exercise, heavy lifting, and any physically demanding tasks.
- Stick to a soft diet for a few days. Chewing on hard foods can irritate the treated area, so it is recommended to stick to a soft diet for a few days after the procedure. This includes foods such as soups, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs.
- Avoid using straws and smoking. Sucking through a straw or smoking cigarettes or cigars can create suction in your mouth, which can disrupt the healing process and lead to complications. This is referred to as a “dry socket,” and it often causes further complications and requires more time to heal following the procedure. It is best to avoid these activities until the doctor and team give you the go-ahead.
- Keep the treated area clean. It is important to keep the treated area clean to prevent infection. Make sure to gently brush your teeth around the treated area.
